Who invented the telephone?
In the 1870s, two inventors Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell both independently designed devices that could transmit speech electrically (the telephone). Incredibly, both men filed for a patent on their designs at the New York patent office on February 14, 1876, with Bell beating Gray by only two hours! After that, Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell entered into a famous legal battle over the invention of the telephone, which Bell won.
Alexander Graham Bell of Scotland is commonly credited as the first inventor of the telephone. The classic story of his crying out to his assistant Thomas Watson "Watson, come here! I want to see you!" is a well known part of American history. |
