A New Trail Blazed for PLS in China's Snowy Northeast

Pearson Education China, Beijing Office

Daqiao Primary English, a brand-new customization pub coursebook for Daqiao Foreign Language School, one of the biggest PLSs in northeast China, is to be published and used from 2009. This trailblazing business mode was initiated by Tony Lin, assistant marketing manager from Pearson Education China, who's in charge of PLS market in China.

Changchun, China, Dec. 15th to 17th, 2008 – Pearson Education China, together with Daqiao Language School, a leading PLS chain headquartered in Changchun, organized a three-day training for a group of 70-plus teachers from Daqiao, aiming to prepare the teachers in theory and practice for the oncoming new coursebook.

The three-day training workshops were collaboratively hosted and presented by Daqiao executives, James Ho, trainer / editor from Asia ELT, and Kitty Zhang, trainer / senior marketing executive from Pearson Education China. The participants were mostly teacher trainers from Daqiao's expansive school districts.

With a reasonable balance of theory and practical ideas, the training served three main purposes. Firstly, it aimed to introduce Daqiao Primary English, a 6-level English course co-published between Pearson Education Asia and Daqiao Language School. Besides, it injected fresh ideas to equip the teachers with fundamental English teaching methods as well as games and activities to implement them. The training also offered a quasi-focus group/fact-finding forum to understand the teachers'  true needs before using the new course.

The three-day training program started with the opening addresses by David Hui, general manager of Daqiao's publishing arm, and Tony Lin, assistant marketing manager from Pearson Education China. It was followed by James' presentation on the features and benefits of Daqiao Primary English, the teaching resources available and the techniques for using them in class. Kitty's training on games and activities for teaching reading, TPR and phonics effectively enhanced the practicality of the training.

On the second day, James gave presentations on the essential factors for effective lesson planning as well as classroom management techniques for solving common problems in a typical English class for Chinese students. Kitty's presentation on songs and chants dazzled the teachers who listened with great interest. The training on the second day was wrapped up with a demo lesson taught by Amanda, the head teacher trainer from Daiqao.

The whole training climaxed on the final day when the participants were given the opportunity to discuss what they have learned throughout the training and subsequently presented their demo lessons based on a sample unit from the new course. Seven groups presented their demo lessons with fun, creativity and ideas learned from the presentations of the past two days.

The success of the three-day training program was clearly reflected by the subtle paradigm shift within the teachers demonstrated during their demo lessons. As an old Chinese saying goes "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step," that significant step has been made with the trailblazing Daqiao Primary English.
