The role of motivation
Learning English is a long and complex process. Many students around the world are asked to learn English in school. They may like to take English classes, or they may do it because it is a requirement or because they will be tested. We usually divide motivation into two separate types: Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.

Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
Intrinsic motivation comes from the learner. It is a desire to learn something or do something because the learner wants to do it or achieve it. The learner has a choice to do it, and there is no outside pressure to do so. Success and the satisfaction of having done well are the reward.

Extrinsic motivation comes from outside influences. Other influences, such as teachers or parents and friends, put pressure on the learner to do something or succeed. A learner who focuses on extrinsic motivation often needs rewards, encouragement, or good grades. Without rewards, this type of learner may lose interest in pursuing the learning objectives. Research shows that learners who are self-motivated are more successful than those who are motivated by outside influences. Here are some ways teachers can help students develop intrinsic motivation:
  • create an enjoyable and exciting learning environment
  • use topics and materials that the students find interesting
